Role Overview

As Canada’s largest diversified mining company, Teck is committed to providing the world with essential resources safely and sustainably. We have a rich history of consistently driving innovation, harnessing cutting-edge technology, and cultivating a dynamic environment that empowers our employees to shape the future.

Embrace Courageous Safety Leadership (CSL): At Teck, safety is a core value, central to our work culture. Through programs like CSL, we empower every employee to be a safety leader, fostering a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating risks. As part of our team, you'll contribute to sustaining this safety-first environment, where speaking up and driving positive change are not just encouraged but expected

Reporting to the Mill Operations Senior Supervisor, the Supervisor Mill Operations will be responsible for the operation to meet operating targets for safety, productivity, and cost effectiveness as well as operator performance.

In this role you will promote a workplace environment which supports safe and efficient behavior on the job and an awareness of and compliance with environmental, safety and Mine Act requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead safety and environmental performance by following and sponsoring site rules and procedures, and by setting a clear example for the crew.
  • Manage in-shift safety and environmental issues, chair incident investigations, and develop practical corrective actions.
  • Participate in or chair monthly crew safety meetings, and confirm that actions from those meetings are closed.
  • Know and follow the site emergency plan, and take the lead on the crew’s response until relieved by the designated incident commander.
  • Supervise hourly operations employees, confirm that assigned work is completed to standard, and manage performance through the Integrated Performance Management System.
  • Coach employees, address performance and conduct issues early, and apply standards consistently.
  • Give and receive a complete shift handover, and keep supervision, maintenance, and the oncoming crew informed of operating status, hazards, and unfinished work.
  • Enforce operating procedures, permits, and isolations, and stop work that is outside those controls.
  • Support continuous improvement and structured problem solving, including follow-up on downtime, quality, and repeat failures.
  • Meet or exceed production, quality, and recovery targets, and escalate issues that put those targets at risk.
  • Monitor equipment condition during the shift and report defects so maintenance can plan the repair.
  • Maintain the training and recertification of hourly employees so the crew can meet operational demand.
  • Manage attendance, overtime, and relief coverage so posts are filled and fatigue and qualification limits are respected.
  • Work effectively with maintenance, metallurgy, technical services, and other departments, and support a constructive crew environment.
  • Complete required logs, reports, and system entries accurately and on time.

Qualifications

Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent. A post-secondary certificate or diploma in mineral processing, metallurgy, or a related discipline is an asset.

Minimum of five years of relevant supervisory experience in mineral processing or a comparable heavy industrial operation, including direct supervision of union hourly employees on shift.

  • Working knowledge of concentrator or mineral-processing circuits, operating procedures, and the production, quality, and recovery targets for the area being supervised.
  • Demonstrated experience leading safety and environmental performance, including hazard identification, incident investigation, and follow-up on corrective actions.
  • Experience supervising in a unionized environment and applying a collective agreement on shift is preferred.
  • Ability to manage shift handover, coverage, attendance, and training so qualified employees are available for the work.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and the ability to use site operating, training, and incident-reporting systems.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills, including the ability to coach performance and address issues directly and consistently.
  • A values-based leader who models and makes decisions aligned with Teck’s values of Safety, Integrity, Sustainability, Excellence, Respect, and Courage.
  • Detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to reset priorities as plant conditions change.
  • Willing and able to work the required shift schedule, including nights and weekends.

Possess a valid driver’s license. Any site-required tickets or certifications, such as confined space, fall protection, or equipment authorization, must be obtained and kept current.

Pay Range: CAD $108,000 - $133,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate’s relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.

Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
